Board advisory

Independent board and committee-level advice on technology, digital investment, AI, cyber risk, governance and major programme decisions.

Independent board-level advice grounded in real operating experience

Technology is now central to strategy, risk, investment and organisational resilience. Boards are increasingly asked to approve significant digital, technology, AI, cyber, outsourcing or transformation decisions, often with limited independent challenge and without a clear view of the operational consequences.

That is where experienced board advisory support can add real value.

I bring this advice from direct experience, not theory alone. I have worked in senior executive roles where technology, finance, risk and delivery decisions had to be made under real pressure, as CIO, CFO, interim executive, CEO/co-founder and transformation lead. I have also worked with boards, audit committees and leadership teams where the challenge was not simply understanding the technology, but understanding what it meant for cost, risk, accountability, business readiness, financing and delivery confidence.

The purpose is not to make the board more technical. It is to help the board ask better questions, challenge assumptions constructively and make better decisions about technology-enabled change.

Where this helps

Board advisory support is particularly useful where an organisation is:

  • considering a major technology, digital or AI investment
  • concerned about the delivery of a major programme
  • seeking stronger oversight of IT, cyber, data or supplier risk
  • reviewing governance, controls or accountability
  • trying to connect technology decisions more clearly to business strategy
  • preparing to approve a significant budget, platform or sourcing decision
  • scaling technology to support growth or international expansion
  • strengthening board or committee capability in digital and technology governance

In many cases, the issue is not that the board lacks information. It is that the information is too technical, too optimistic, too fragmented or not clearly connected to business value.

What my experience brings to the boardroom

My background combines Chartered Accountant discipline, computer engineering training, CIO and CFO operating experience, and hands-on transformation delivery. That means I can look at board-level technology decisions from several angles at once:

  • whether the business case is commercially credible
  • whether the financing plan supports the ambition
  • whether the technology direction is realistic and scalable
  • whether the governance is strong enough
  • whether delivery risk is being reported honestly
  • whether supplier claims are being challenged properly
  • whether the organisation is ready to absorb the change
  • whether the expected business advantage is clear, measurable and achievable

The experience behind this work includes technology refreshes, ERP and business process transformation, RIS/PACS and healthcare systems, IT outsourcing, cloud adoption, analytics capability development, operational restructuring, technology governance, supplier management and major programme oversight across pharma, AEC and healthcare environments, as well as financial services, distribution, public/semi-state settings, start-ups and fast-growth companies scaling technology and financing international expansion.

That range helps identify common patterns quickly: weak ownership, unclear benefits, unrealistic timelines, underdeveloped business cases, poor supplier control, clinical or operational readiness gaps, governance that exists on paper but not in practice, technology platforms that do not scale internationally, financing plans that are not aligned to delivery capacity, or technology decisions that are not properly connected to the operating model.

How I help

Support can include:

  • independent review of major technology proposals
  • challenge and refinement of business cases
  • review of programme governance and reporting
  • advice on AI, cyber, data and digital risk
  • support for audit, risk or technology committees
  • assessment of IT governance and decision rights
  • guidance on supplier, outsourcing or platform dependency
  • review of scalability, financing and delivery readiness for expansion
  • mentoring or support for executives presenting technology matters to the board

The work is independent, practical and written for decision-makers. It avoids unnecessary technical language and focuses on what the board needs to understand: what is being proposed, why it matters, what risk is being taken, what value is expected, what assumptions need testing, and what conditions should be in place before approval.

Why this matters

Business Advantage through Technology does not come from approving more technology. It comes from approving the right investments, with the right governance, the right delivery conditions, the right financing assumptions and a clear connection to measurable business value.

Good board advisory support helps reduce avoidable risk before commitments are made. It also helps boards challenge constructively, support management effectively and maintain confidence that technology investment is being directed toward real organisational advantage.
