I believe that in the twenty-first century, we will see more and more people adopting a `portfolio' approach to their lives and to their work. A valuable resource about Charles Handy mindsets could be found here:

I think this book is excellent.A very good study on managing in the Public Sector and why it is so difficult. I thought it really broke the myth that medical professionals put the patient first.I thought it was clear after reading the book that they put their own pay and conditions first and that the patients are very much second. It would be interesting to know if he had a choice to start from scratch would he design a service around public or private sector employees.

We are using Freebase's data dump to showcase our technology of making information search extremely easy. Have a look: http://goo.gl/CdSDj

Hi Barry,

Lots of talk about bubble all right - for sure the rules are different now - but the whole 'Cloud' buzz has got lots of large companies scrambling to get into the space. I hope we don't have a repeat performance of 2000 ... the global economy is shaky enough as it is!

Did you read Steve Blank's excellent business book - The 4 Steps to the Epiphany?

Barry

In answer to your question about whether ecadamy could do what they did, as they are a UK based company EU Data protection rules apply to them.

A quick review of their Privacy policy and terms and conditions throws up no scenario where by they can email people ostensibly on your behalf. Interestingly their terms and conditions are very explicit about how you can use their service to email people using the platform or via "invitations".

So, in short... you voted with your feet but it would appear their actions in processing personal data for a purpose which was not specified and for which consent or a lawful reason can by idenfitied might constitute a breach of Data Protection regulations.

Andrew, in the last 6-9 months have begun to carve out a little more time 'off-line'. Have read a number of books and, in general, have found being 'off-line' very positive. Now some of the books I've read I first came across through some 'on-line' content: but not even Carr says it's all a waste of time.

In many ways some of what you reference above reminds me of people buying Coles Notes in the old days rather than trying to figure out Hamlet for themselves.

I'm a teacher, Barry, and have to be interested in these issues whether I like it or not. We've gone from a situation 5 years ago where I couldn't ask a class to look something up on the web, for fear of embarrassing those who didn't have a computer, to assuming that most assignments I set these days will be downloaded and minimally altered.
There's a very good long review of Carr's book in the March 3 edition of the London Review of Books ( not sure if that's available online - I bought a paper copy!)

Hoping to find lots of good news in 2011.

Cluetrain has a few chapters added - authors revisiting 10 years on to see what had happened their predictions. For me the the real kick was reading Cluetrain for the first time. Not sure whether merits purchase for the additional material.
